Project Summary

Hand of the North is owned by Andy, a massage therapist by day and martial arts instructor on the side. He needed a logo with strong northern iconography that could seamlessly work for both his martial arts dojo and his massage therapy practice. Just as importantly, he wanted the identity to honor his martial arts lineage, tracing back to Soke Rod Sachonowski of Juko Kai International (known for being Elvis Presley’s bodyguard). To reflect this history, I illustrated a traditional martial arts hand gesture using Andy’s own sensei as the hand model—creating an authentic visual tie to his lineage. I paired the gesture with a North Star set inside an emblem to reinforce the “north” theme and give the mark a bold, timeless presence. While the gesture references traditional Japanese martial arts, the hands can also be interpreted as a subtle nod to massage therapy, allowing the logo to function meaningfully in both worlds.
